Quito, Ecuador

Walking across the border to Ecuador, we heard people screaming 'turn around, turn around'. We soon understood why: the country was currently in a state of emergency, all roads were blocked, there were militaries and fires everywhere. Apparently the government did something unpopular and all transportation workers went on strike.

Fortunately, the national airline was still functioning and we managed to get to Quito. If we were going to be stuck somewhere for two weeks, we wanted it to be Quito.

Demonstrators are blocking the streets. The military answered with teargas, which on several occasions got into our hotel. That was NOT nice.

The Old Town, now included in UNESCO's world heritage list, is fascinating because it is so full of life.

Santo Domingo.

Plaza de la Independencia.

Plaza San Francisco.
