{"id":524,"date":"2009-02-24T14:27:19","date_gmt":"2009-02-24T13:27:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/daniel.haxx.se\/blog\/?p=524"},"modified":"2009-02-24T15:14:49","modified_gmt":"2009-02-24T14:14:49","slug":"saying-lib-out-loud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/daniel.haxx.se\/blog\/2009\/02\/24\/saying-lib-out-loud\/","title":{"rendered":"Saying lib out loud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Not being a native English speaker, I&#8217;ve always pronounced <a href=\"http:\/\/curl.haxx.se\/libcurl\/\">libcurl<\/a> with a &#8216;lib&#8217; part as if it was part of &#8216;liberty&#8217;, and &#8216;curl&#8217; with a K sound and ending with &#8216;earl&#8217;. I don&#8217;t know of any Swedes who would <strong>not<\/strong> pronounce &#8216;lib&#8217; like that, but when speaking Swedish we&#8217;re of course highly influenced by other things so it&#8217;s not really relevant.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t until I got on <a href=\"http:\/\/daniel.haxx.se\/blog\/2009\/01\/10\/floss-weekly-51-on-curl\/\">FLOSS Weekly<\/a> that I fully realized that some English speakers would actually pronounce the &#8216;lib&#8217; part as the first syllable of &#8216;library&#8217; and that does make sense considering lib is short for library.<\/p>\n<p>But libcurl is just a smaller player here. How do you English speakers pronounce libc? libxml? libgcc?<\/p>\n<p>And yes, this is another one of those really important issues in life. <em>Almost<\/em> as important as <a href=\"http:\/\/xkcd.com\/541\/\">how to close parenthetical expressions with emoticons<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/xkcd.com\/541\/\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not being a native English speaker, I&#8217;ve always pronounced libcurl with a &#8216;lib&#8217; part as if it was part of &#8216;liberty&#8217;, and &#8216;curl&#8217; with a K sound and ending with &#8216;earl&#8217;.
