{"id":817,"date":"2009-05-19T23:00:26","date_gmt":"2009-05-19T21:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/daniel.haxx.se\/blog\/?p=817"},"modified":"2009-06-01T11:25:01","modified_gmt":"2009-06-01T09:25:01","slug":"linux-on-eee-s101","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/daniel.haxx.se\/blog\/2009\/05\/19\/linux-on-eee-s101\/","title":{"rendered":"Linux on eee s101"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I got myself a new toy the other day: an <a href=\"http:\/\/eeepc.asus.com\/global\/products101.html\">Eee PC S101<\/a> with 16GB SSD, an extra 32GB SDHC and 2GB ram.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-821\" title=\"Asus EEE PC S101\" src=\"http:\/\/daniel.haxx.se\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/asus-eee-s101-150x108.jpg\" alt=\"Asus EEE PC S101\" width=\"150\" height=\"108\" srcset=\"https:\/\/daniel.haxx.se\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/asus-eee-s101-150x108.jpg 150w, https:\/\/daniel.haxx.se\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/asus-eee-s101-300x216.jpg 300w, https:\/\/daniel.haxx.se\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/asus-eee-s101.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>There&#8217;s already a bazillion instructions on how to install and run Linux on your EEE PCs out there, but they all seemed to miss one (for me) crucial little detail:<\/p>\n<p>In order to boot from the SD card, you need to press <strong>Escape<\/strong> when the bios start-up screen shows.<\/p>\n<p>But now: to get the bios screen to show, you need some extra magic: you need to press <strong>F2<\/strong> immediately at start-up to enter the bios setup screen and then you need to disable &#8220;<strong>boot booster<\/strong>&#8221; as otherwise it&#8217;ll skip the escape checking entirely!<\/p>\n<p>Using this trick, I&#8217;ve now installed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geteasypeasy.com\/\">easypeasy<\/a> on it and I&#8217;ll dual-boot with XP for a while since it came factory installed with that.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve fallen for the commercials and also subscribed to 3g broadband now (you know the blatant lying &#8220;up to 7.2mbit&#8221; which never in reality can even come close even if I would be alone sitting on top of a base station) and I warmed up my toy and connection the other day (still running XP then) by working on <a href=\"http:\/\/curl.haxx.se\/\">curl<\/a> code and made a few commits etc, while sitting on a wooden bench next to the field where my daughter was having her soccer practice.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, SSHing to my primary servers and editing code with <a href=\"http:\/\/daniel.haxx.se\/blog\/2009\/01\/08\/emacs\/\">emacs<\/a> or reading email with <a href=\"http:\/\/daniel.haxx.se\/blog\/2008\/05\/21\/alpine-in-pine-out\/\">alpine<\/a> turned out a much better experience than I anticipated as I&#8217;ve read about how terrible the roundtrip times can be over 3g.
